Finnish grit — iron will, persist when everything says stop.
Sisu is the Finnish concept of inner strength — guts, grit, and stubborn persistence when everything says stop. It is not bravado. It is silent. That moment when you grit your teeth without a word, cast aside self-pity, and do what needs to be done — no matter how much it hurts. Finns do not view Sisu as just a word. It is national DNA. After 90 days of Nord, this is what separates those who endure from those who quit.
Core Rules
- Cold daily — every morning shower ends with at least 30 seconds of cold water. No exceptions, no negotiations.
- No complaint without action — if something bothers you and you can fix it, fix it. If you cannot fix it, stay silent.
- Finish what you start — every workout, every task, every difficult conversation. Do not leave things half-done.
- One hard thing per day — deliberately choose one uncomfortable action each day. Not heroic. Just uncomfortable enough.
4-Week Progression
Week 1 — Overcoming Comfort
Goal: Prove to your own mind that you command your body, not your laziness.
Sisu begins where your comfort zone ends. This week builds the foundations of self-discipline.
- Cold finish — end every morning shower with 30–60 seconds of pure cold water. Breathe slowly. Control the shock.
- Digital fast — set aside 3 hours each evening (e.g. 6–9 PM) with no phone, computer, or TV. When the urge comes, acknowledge it and hold out.
- Walk instead — if any errand is within 5 km, ban the car and the bus. Go on foot. Even in rain.
Daily prompt: "What did you avoid today out of comfort — and what would have happened if you had not?"
Week 2 — Physical and Mental Resilience
Goal: Learn to function at the exact moment your inner voice says "I can't go on."
Finns say Sisu only activates once all your normal energy has been depleted.
- One extra set — at the end of every workout, when you think you cannot manage another repetition, do three more.
- Constructive silence — if someone at work or home pushes you toward a reactive reply, stay silent. Process the emotion internally first.
- Long monotonous effort — plan one activity this week that is boring and long: a 2-hour slow run or a 15 km walk. The goal is to overcome the urge to quit.
Daily prompt: "When did your inner voice tell you to stop today — and what did you do?"
Week 3 — Confronting Discomfort Directly
Goal: Direct exposure to cold and discomfort to train the mind.
Finns love avanto — swimming in ice-cold water right after a hot sauna. Cold is not punishment. It is practice.
- The postponed calls — do three things you have been putting off for weeks. Call the person you have conflict with, tackle the difficult email, clean the most-avoided corner of your space.
- Cold immersion — find a cold lake or stream, or fill a bathtub with cold water. Submerge to your neck for 2 minutes. Fight the panic with calm, controlled breathing.
- 16-hour fast — fast from dinner to the next day's lunch. Drink only water or plain tea. Prove to yourself that your body can function without immediate gratification.
Daily prompt: "What did you confront this week that you had been running from?"
Week 4 — Absolute Sisu
Goal: Combine physical exhaustion, cold, and mental pressure. Your personal Winter War.
This week you find out what you are truly made of.
- 5 AM rise — set your alarm for 5:00 AM. Without overthinking, get up, get dressed, and go outside. No whining. Just do it.
- Expedition day — plan one extreme day: hike in poor weather, carry a heavy pack, walk for 4+ hours. When you are soaked and tired, do not stop early. Finish what you planned.
- Week without excuses — every day this week, do the thing you least want to do first. Not last. First.
Daily prompt: "What are you truly made of — and did this week show you something you did not know before?"

"Iron will. Not loud. Not celebrated. You just kept going. That is enough."
Seasonal Note
Sisu sits second in the Nord stack for a reason. Friluftsliv opened the body to the outside world — it was the warmup. Sisu breaks open the interior: the part of you that wants to stop. After this month, the things that used to stop you will feel smaller. That is the point. That is Sisu.
